Kerala in 10 days: backwaters, tea hills and a workable route

Fly into Kochi, head up to the tea hills first while you're freshest, then come down to the backwaters to wind down. Finishing near the coast means a short final transfer back to the airport rather than a long one.

Roughly: 3 nights Munnar, 3 nights Alleppey, 2 nights Kumarakom, with the remaining time absorbed by arrival, transfers and a night either side in Kochi.

Munnar sits about 110 km from Kochi — roughly 3.5 hours by road, and genuinely worth doing in daylight for the climb through the Western Ghats. It's a hill station of rolling tea estates, cool air and spread-out viewpoints, so hire a car or taxi rather than trying to walk between sights.

Three nights lets you do a tea estate visit, an early-morning viewpoint, and still have a slow day. Budget from around ₹2,800 per day.

Come down from the hills to Alappuzha (Alleppey), about 75 km from Kochi airport and served by its own railway station. This is the classic Kerala experience — houseboats and shikara canoes are the main way to see the water, and one overnight on a houseboat is worth building in.

Alleppey runs pricier than Munnar, from around ₹3,400 per day, largely because houseboat stays carry a premium.

Kumarakom is a short hop from Alleppey and a quieter counterpart to it — the same backwater landscape, but calmer, with a bird sanctuary and resort-style stays. Explore by boat or a short auto ride between the sanctuary, resorts and jetties.

It's about 90 km back to Kochi's airport and railway station, which makes for an easy final transfer. From around ₹3,000 per day.

September to March is the reliable window for Munnar and Alleppey; Kumarakom is at its best November to February. That overlap — November through February — is the safest bet if you want all three at their peak, though it's also the busiest and priciest stretch.

Avoid peak monsoon (June–August) unless heavy rain appeals. It's genuinely beautiful and much cheaper, but boat trips and hill drives get disrupted.
