How much does a trip to India actually cost?

Shoestring: dorm beds or basic guesthouses, local buses and shared autos, street food and thali meals. Comfortable for a solo traveller with flexible plans.

Mid-range: a private air-conditioned room, a hired car or taxi for day trips, sit-down restaurant meals. This is where most first-time couples and families land.

Luxury: heritage hotels or boutique resorts, a private car and driver, and higher-end dining. Prices scale up fastest in destinations with heritage-property stock, like lake cities and forts.

These are researched per-day ranges (in ₹, per person unless noted) from three destinations at very different price points:

Season: prices climb in peak months (roughly October–March across most of the country) and drop in the off-season — sometimes by 30–40% for accommodation.

Solo vs. sharing: most accommodation is priced per room, not per person, so travelling as a couple or group roughly halves (or better) your per-person stay cost.

Booking style: walk-in rates in popular towns during peak season are usually higher than booking a couple of weeks ahead.

Region: hill stations and lake cities with limited heritage-property stock (like Udaipur) command a premium that flatter, more built-up cities (like Varanasi) don't.

Domestic travel between regions (flights or long-distance trains) is a separate line item — a Delhi–Kerala flight, for instance, costs meaningfully more than getting around within one region.
